This photo exhibition shows both the devastation resulting from the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011 and the subsequent recovery efforts, which has been remarkable in its speed and efficiency.
The Great East Japan Earthquake, which hit on March 11, 2011, was a disaster of unprecedented scale for Japan. Casualties include over 15,800 dead, 3,000 missing and 6,000 injured. Since then, however, Japan has made tremendous progress on the road to recovery, thanks in great part to the outpouring of sympathy and generosity from the international community. This exhibition is a reflection of the resilience of the Japanese people, as well as the kind support of Japan’s friends abroad. It also is an expression of Japan’s sincere gratitude.

Sendai Station is a key rail hub for the Tohoku area. Shinkansen operations were stopped by the earthquake, but had resumed by April 25.
東北エリアの鉄道の拠点、仙台駅。震災の直後から東北新幹線は営業を停止したが、4月25日、運転が再開された。

The airport, designed to harmonize with the surrounding city and landscape,
reopened one month after the tsunami and stands as a symbol of the reconstruction efforts.
海、砂浜、松林、運河、そして仙台市の街並み。美しい眺望に調和するY字の滑走路。震災後1ヶ月で再開し、復興のシンボルとなった。

Sendai Airport, gateway to Tohoku, was buried under tsunami rubble. Just one month later, on April 13, the airport resumed operations.
東北の空の玄関、仙台空港。震災の津波で冠水し、瓦礫に埋もれたが、およそ1ヶ月後の4月13日、空港は再開した。

Most buildings survived the M9 earthquake but were destroyed by the force of the tsunami, which even carried large ships onshore.
マグニチュード9の地震に多くの建物は耐えたが、津波による破壊はくい止められなかった。大型の貨物船まで、陸に乗り上げたのだから！
